Beckie our daily customer for PROUD Canteen

Beckie with her mother taking soda in PROUD Canteen

Beckie is a little girl who is our daily customer at Proud Canteen. She is eleven years old and she studies at Bishop Asili Memorial Nursery and Primary school in Primary Five.

She came to the canteen her first time with her mother Byamugisha Eve. After she continued to come alone.

Beckie says that she likes mandazi from Proud Canteen more than any other mandazi she has ever eaten; she adds that they put good flavors and they are very sweet.

Beckie promised Manager Kiconco Mercy that she will celebrate her twelfth birthday in the Proud Canteen.

Ebenezer meetings at PROUD Canteen

Ebenezer fellowship meeting at PROUD Canteen

The Ebenezer fellowship is the fellowship that is organized monthly at Proud Canteen. This fellowship is for the married (couples). Its mainly for teaching the couples how to build good and strong families.

It has a lot of topics to teach to the couples for example how wives should treat their husbands and how husbands should treat their wives. It also teaches marrieds about how to work and making the savings for their families, looking after the children by teaching them good morals and sending them to school. It also touches the “love” affairs for the couple and teaches the spiritual aspects for example to pray while at home.

After the fellowship members get the snacks and drinks from the Proud Canteen. The members say that they like the environment and the good spiritual pictures on the wall in the canteen room.

Lydia Baroles birthday

Lydia Barole with bishop Onesmus ready to cut the cake

Lydia Barole is one of the oldest ladies from Kabale. She is well known by many people in Kabale and outside Kabale for preaching the gospel for 50 years. She made many followers and she later opened gathering place at her home in Bushuro-Kabale where people gather for praying.
She celebrated her 90 years old on 16/6/2024. The occasion was honored by the Bishop of North Kigezi Rt.Rev. Onesmus Asiimwe who was one of the people Lydia moved with in preaching the gospel when he was still a youth.

Barole ordered her birthday cake from Proud Canteen which was in form of a bible as she loved the bible and loved Jesus. Kiconco Mercy the manager from Proud Uganda took the cake to the occasion and she helped in cutting and serving the cake to people who attended the function. The function was very colorful and the old lady Lydia thanked the manager for bringing her the good quality cake and she wished God’s blessings to the project.

Alex's wedding party

Wedding cakes by WORK UG

Kwesiga Alex is the manager from Kirigime guest house. He was wedding his wife Prossy Kyomugisha on 12/6/2024.The couple ordered a very big cake from the bakery of Work Uganda. The cake was very beautiful with good color of white and light blue.

Kwesiga like to sympathize with project of Work Uganda as he appreciates the work being done there. There is one girl who is his relative from Kanungu called Arinda Mercy but currently they reside in Kabale district. After seeing how the project has shaped Mercy, he really loved the project and learnt to know that children with intellectual disabilities can also learn and do something very meaningful.

We are happy as the project to get supporters such as Alex and we wish him happy marriage.

WORK UG give away cakes

Basket give away cakes from WORK UG

Give away cakes are special cakes normally made in traditional material shapes for example drums and baskets. In Kabale the traditional cake is made from the baskets, that is because in the past people used to give the new married girls the gifts of baskets to use in their daily house hold activities.

Mbabazi Rose had her give away on 9/3/2024. She ordered her basket cakes from Work Uganda. The Work Uganda personnel led by Kiconco Mercy baked the best basket cakes decorated in black and white. Rose was very happy and grateful for the cakes.

Birthday party for Ayebare Praise

 Praise makes 17 years

The birthday for Ayebare Praise took place on 23/2/2024. Praise made 17 years and she was very happy. Praise composed her menu of beef, rice, mashed matooke and sodas. She enjoyed the meal and all children at the project were very happy to enjoy the birthday party for Praise.

The children and personnel sang for her birthday songs and danced for her which brought a lot of smiles on her face. The manager congratulated Praise for the milestone and she said to her now “Praise you are remaining with one year to make 18 years and you become a big lady and you will not be called a child anymore.”

Praise became happier to know that she is going to be a big lady.

Praise started at the project in 2014

Praise the baker

Ayebare Praise is the student worker at the Work Uganda. She prefers baking to other activities done at the project. She likes baking mandazi and pan cakes. Right now she is not yet the best baker of the project but she has a zeal in baking. Praise is improving in baking all the time; the manager hopes that she will become the best baker with great products. The manager sees working in the bakery as the future profession of Praise.

Triplets' birthday

Bridget and Mercy feeding each other cake

On 16/10/2023 we held a birth day party at the project for the three girls which we called the “Triplet Birthday”. The three girls were born in the same month of October whereby Katushabe Bridget was born on 16th October, Mugyenyi Sarah was born on 1st October and Arinda Mercy was born on 10th October. They celebrated their birthday on 16th October and they enjoyed their day by eating the food of their choice.

They composed their menu of mashed matooke, beef and sodas. The project had made a good butter cake for the three girls with their names on top of the cake. It was enjoyable as each girl was feeding each other a cake as a sign of love and togetherness. After the celebration each girl took a gift cake to their parents and siblings to eat at their homes.

PROUD Canteen

Missie 15. Deel 4: materieel. Mission 15. Part 4: infrastructure and equipment.

Missie 15. Deel 4: materieel

We verwijzen bijvoorbeeld naar ‘Black is Blessed’: the Biblical, inclusive art of Laura James.

In totaal 77 stuks (unit 1: 18; unit 2: 24; unit 3: 35).

Tenslotte lieten we 5 metalen deurmatten aanmaken.

Mission 15. Part 4: Infrastructure and equipment

Materially, steps are being taken in the field of infrastructure and equipment. Further thought was also given to the layout of the garden.

Infrastructure

All classrooms were given an indication of their function: from 'workers room' to 'kitchen' to 'office'. The 3 units (unit 1, 2 and 3) were also named.

Unit 1 got a solar. A housing was provided for the battery.

Unit 3 Canteen was fitted with windows and gutters. Boards to write the menu were placed on the wall.

On the street side, advertising messages were painted on units 3 and 1, respectively for PROUD Canteen and parties.

Before only one side of unit 2 was equipped with electricity. Now all units were connected to the electricity grid. This required wiring certificates, inspection of the site by personnel of the electricity company Umeme and finally the connection of meters 2 and 3 to the nearest electricity poles.

Equipment

For the equipping of the canteen (unit 3) we have ordered for 6 extra tables (tables for 2 people). We also bought a nice fabric to cover the tables; the tablecloths were made by a neighbor seamstress.

A counter and a cutlery chest of drawers were placed in the canteen.

The interior of the canteen was decorated with a photo exhibition about The Life of Jesus. We show a multicultural Christ and church. For example, we refer to 'Black is Blessed: the Biblical, inclusive art of Laura James.’

The bakery (unit 2) was equipped with a second oven 'made in Kabale'. The 'kitchen-store' (unit 2) got its first two racks. In the kitchen, washable tablecloths were placed on the tables and we provided the necessary cutting boards.

Job coach Apophia made a list of priority purchases. We started by looking for a fridge but all models available in Kabale turned out to be unsustainable.

We also figured out which lamps are available in the local trade and listed which lamps we need. A total of 77 pieces (unit 1: 18; unit 2: 24; unit 3: 35).

Finally, we had 5 metal doormats made.

We asked our volunteer to work on making an inventory.

Garden

In the garden we have made progress in recent years, but now it looks as if we have reached our maximum. Time to take a closer look at the design of the garden and the working methods. The project leader has already written a note about this. Meanwhile, in Flanders, Freddy and Leon participate as much as possible in the 'Learning network vegetable gardens' of which the Province of East Flanders is one of the initiators.

Missie 15. Deel 3: personeel. (Dutch) Mission 15. Part 3: personnel. (English)

Missie 15. Deel 3: personeel (Dutch)

Projectleidster

Kiconco Mercy

Kiconco Mercy is onze projectleidster.

Vorming bakken

Job coaches and student-workers attending the baking course by Moses Agaba

Mission 15. Part 3: personnel

Project leader

Kiconco Marcey is our project leader. She has gained a lot of experience, fully supports the mission and is a beacon of trust. She is pedagogically trained (university), is a game changer and has built up a large network over the years. That is of great value for a project like ours.

Job coaches

She is assisted by 2 job coaches. Job coaches are expected to be more flexible than teachers. Assiimwe Apophia (a regular in the project) and Nshabahurira Charity (recently appointed) both have a background in vocational training and have good household skills. Charity wrote a text for the blog (blog 163).

The team is completed by 1 guard-worker. New is that 1 staff member lives in. That's a good thing in the run-up to the opening of the canteen.

Baking training

During mission 15 we organized an additional baking training. Old acquaintance Moses Agaba left his company in Jinja for a week, traveled more than 500 km to Kabale and helped us build a second oven. Immediately he demonstrated how well it works. That's how we like it. The course was followed by 3 staff members, 4 apprentices and 1 parent.

Missie 15. Deel 2: operationeel plan. Mission 15. Part 2: operational plan.

Missie 15. Deel 2: operationeel plan.

Mission 15. Part 2: operational plan.

The operational plan of WORK UG focuses on two parts: (1) the PROUD Canteen business plan and (2) the individual future planning of the apprenticeship employees.

Business plan

PROUD Canteen's business plan dates from 2021 and was updated in 2023. The project leader proposes a 'commercial parties' note that will be integrated into the business plan. Our volunteer (English teacher) prepares the English of the plan so that it can be put into a brochure -CP series.

Social enterprise status

Key elements in the realization of the plan are the material finishing of the canteen (which is discussed in part 4) and the acquisition of the status of social enterprise.

We talked to Muhumuza Monica (Senior Probation Officer for Kabale District) and Tumwesigye Denis (Probation Officer Kabale District), responsible for vulnerable groups, about the status to be adopted . We also visited Ndyabawe Swizeen (Senior Labour Officer Kabale District) responsible for the registration of NGOs and CBOs. A concrete result was the development of the 'work permit' for our CBO, WORK Uganda.

We also spoke with Niwagaba Emmanuel, Community Development Officer at Kabale Municipality.

The focus seems to be on the district. The policy makers who sympathize with the project often act as personal guarantors, but that is different from helping us to acquire a sustainable (social) status.

Individual future planning

In addition to the realization of the Canteen and the opening of jobs for the students (apprenticeship formula), guiding the young adults in their relationship life and participation in the community is also part of our core mission.

Conversations with students and parents

This is of course done in collaboration with the network of the youngsters, first and foremost their parents and family members. We start conversations with the students and parents separately and together. For example, I can participate in a conversation with Sarah, Sarah's mother, Sarah and her mother, Bridget, Bridget's father, Bridget and her father, Bridget's mother, Bridget and her mother, Arinda-Mercy, Arinda-Mercy's mother, Arinda-Mercy and her mother.

We see that every family situation is different. Although fathers are the formal head of the family, mothers play a very important role. Fathers are often away from home. It is striking that income acquisition at the family level is a very stressful activity - often in survival mode. We also notice that the risks of unwanted pregnancies for young girls - with or without disabilities - are high (high risk of sexual assault). Anti-conception is a fixed part of the conversations. Spending of the apprenticeship income also. Parents appreciate the increasing independence of their daughters and sons and their material and intangible contribution to the household.

New brochures

Our volunteer Jolien has written a note 'sexual education'. Uganda insists very much on its own approach to sex education, which is laid down in a national document and advocates abstinence from marriage. The authorities/Ministry of National Education reject more liberal approaches of NGOs. Nevertheless, a more progressive approach seems appropriate since the number of unwanted pregnancies and child parenthoods has increased exponentially in the corona period – schools were closed during 2 years! And the number of under age pregnancies and parenthoods was already high before the COVID period.

Our volunteer has also written a note 'recreational activities'. The arch can not always be tense and a fun group activity from time to time strengthens the group feeling. In the meantime, 2 brochures on movement activities are also ready to be included in the curriculum leaflets series.

Missie 15. Deel 1: visie, missie, doelgroep. Mission 15. Part 1: vision, mission, target group.

Enkele leerlingen van WORK Uganda bezoeken de nieuwe centrale markt van Kabale Some students of WORK Uganda visiting the new central market of Kabale

By Leon Peeters

Mission 15. Part 1: vision, mission, target group.

From March 23 to May 23 I went to Uganda. This is mission 15 in support of the PROUD project. We work in the project with a management scheme: vision, mission, target group, operational plan, personnel, material, financial, relations and reporting. They are therefore reviewed every year in the work plan. I now devote a few articles to explaining the work of my mission.

In this first section I talk about vision, mission and target group.

Vision

Young adults with intellectual disabilities as full community members.

Mission

The emphasis will be on full-fledged work opportunities for our students. But also on having a good attitude to life, on the quality of the relationships they enter into as young adults.

Target audience

7 young adults, 6 women and 1 man with an intellectual disability

We start from equal rights for people with intellectual disabilities compared to other citizens. Now that our target group has evolved from children to young adults, there are different accents. Their place in the community, their relationship life and acquiring a job are given special attention.

My first day at WORK Uganda, by Charity

Charity making contact with Pritty

My name is Charity Nshabahurira. It was on 25thApril 2023. I came when I didn’t know where the project was located. Along the way I met a certain young girl. I asked her where the Proud Uganda project was located and she directed me.

When I reached inside the project, I saw students and I asked them where the office was. They directed me to the manager and the advisor who welcomed me warmly. I introduced myself to them and they also introduced themselves to me.

I was oriented by Leon and we moved around the project premises, then after the manager told me that they will call me later to inform me about the outcome of the interview. The week later I was called by Mercy to report for the job.

My thankful message goes to the the manager and the advisor who helped me to get used to the project.

By Charity

Note from WORK UG

Charity has studied at the vocational school of Bishop Asili. We found someone with vocational skills, cooking, baking, gardening and knitting among others. Vocational skills have become more important in the project now that we are training the girls of the target group for a job at PROUD Canteen. But Charity also has a reserve of talent and a responsible attitude.

In the mean time she started well in the project. She works in team with Apophia, who also has a background in vocational education, more in particular hotel and tourism. Apophia is our appreciated collaborator since many years.

Baking training at WORK UG

Cake WORK UG - Training course Agaba Moses

There has been baking training course for WORK Uganda for both girls and the personnel. Agaba Moses was the one carrying out baking course. Moses is one of the experts for baking and he has baking business in Jinja where he has gained more knowledge and technology in baking. This has been made to improve on the quality of baking products of Proud Canteen.

Student Sarah carrying bread

He has taught on making the following baking products: cakes, cupcakes, samosas, bread, bans, samosas among others. Sarah one of the girls was very happy for the course as she enjoys baking more. She was proud of the bread that was baked and became good and delicious. She was also happy and informed personnel that she will tell it at home that the project produces the best bread. Moses also taught the personnel and the girls types of icing the cakes, which are fondant icing and royal icing. He also taught designing the cake and writing on it.

Afwerken PROUD Canteen (2021+2022)

Finish PROUD Canteen (2021+2022)

From 2022, the PROUD Canteen should be largely finished and fully operational in 2023.

Preparing for plastering unit 3

Finishing work started in 2021. The plastering of the ceiling and interior walls, the joining of the last part of the exterior walls (in June) and the laying of the underlayment for the floor (end of September) were carried out by Orishaba Brian Contractors. The floor tiles were laid (early October) by Emma Kigezi Master Tilers.

                                                                          add picture

These works were financed with a subsidy from the Municipality of Berlare. On November 30, 2021, the file 'Justification of subsidy 2021' was submitted to the municipality. We sincerely thank the municipality of Berlare for her generous contribution.

We have now reached the point where we can start thinking about the glass and paintwork, the hanging of the chandeliers, etc., in other words about the interior works that will determine the look of the canteen.

Kyomugisha working with the role

The painting was done in May 2022 by Kyomugisha Norah. She is an exception in the painting world that consists almost entirely of men. It was a pleasure to watch her at work. In the work with the role she is unparalleled.

Other steps in the finishing of PROUD Canteen will follow this year.

Repainting the entrance gate

In the meantime we also worked on the sanitary facilities of unit 1 and 2. And the entrance gate, the water tank carrying stand and the fence of unit 1 were repainted. From now on, we will reserve an amount for maintenance work every year.

2022-2024 PROUD Canteen. Business plan.

2022-2024 PROUD Canteen. Business plan.

PROUD Canteen vers geschilderd

Take away is ook mogelijk.

2022-2024 PROUD Canteen. Business plan.

PROUD Canteen binnenaanzicht in april 2021

In the coming years, we want to introduce our students to working life.”PROUD Canteen” aims to become the neighborhood's favorite cafeteria. The aim is to employ our young adults in a normal working environment.

We spent a lot of time developing PROUD Canteen's business plan (1). What's in this plan?

We first look for the type of restaurant we want to run. Chapter 1 lists criteria that help distinguish/characterize restaurants. In Chapter 2 we choose a type of restaurant and describe what PROUD Canteen will look like.

Chapter 3 describes the business plan. Our vision and mission, our products and services, the responsibilities of the employees and the marketing aspects are discussed. We conclude with a SWOT analysis and final considerations.

The vision in a nutshell: offering full-fledged jobs to our young adults with intellectual disabilities in a fully-fledged working environment (social enterprise). We want to build a “community canteen” (cafeteria style) where people from the neighborhood can consume a snack and a drink.

We go for a cafeteria style menu. We want to prepare most of the snacks and drinks ourselves. We have chosen not to offer alcoholic beverages. We are resolutely going for Ugandan cuisine and the familiar diet – that means lots of vegetables and little meat. The plan includes a detailed menu, billed as “homemade, fresh and healthy.”

We are going to give the Canteen a modern look with fresh colors and a cultural touch. There will be a photo exhibition on the blank wall. We have already determined the layout of the room. At the entrance is the “counter”, where customers can see what is on offer and place their order. Take away is also possible. In good weather, customers can also sit on the lawn in front of the canteen.

The tasks for the board, the management, the staff for the hall and the kitchen are listed. The supervision of employees with disabilities is discussed. The new challenges are at least as great for the supervisors as for the students. Just think of the tasks of the manager: we discuss operational, personnel, stock, financial, marketing and information technology management.

The student workers are supervised by job coaches. A lot of attention is paid to letting the employees grow in their job. We want to create an encouraging workplace climate: it is important that the counselors choose and dose their support and interventions well. The operation of the canteen is expanded very gradually.

In the marketing section we look at the classic elements: product, price, place and promotion. We offer both 'take away' and on-site consumption. The price must be competitive. We carefully looked at the neighborhood and potential customers. We will already invite potential customers for an introduction during the trial period.

We situate the 'canteen' within Kabale's business landscape and want to profile ourselves as a social enterprise. A SWOT analysis also makes us aware of our weaknesses. One area of concern is certainly the team's lack of trading experience. We have identified bussinesses (managers) from whom we can learn. We have also worked out a detailed budget.

The Canteen is an important element in opening the project to the wider society. Good management practices, increased community involvement, continuous attention to the well-being of our employees and effective job coaching are the critical factors for success.

We can already count on the much appreciated support of the Province of East Flanders to develop this sub-project.
